Kick Cancer’s Butt

A fellow blogger, Michele Gross, started an amazing campaign called “Calling All Sistahs”, after her discovery of breast cancer. The idea behind it is to remind all women to do their monthly self exams and yearly mammograms. I was so inspired by her positive attitude and her great idea, that I too wanted to remind my friends to do monthly checks. So I decided to make tons of cards and magnets for them so they could pop it on their fridge or their bathroom mirror. I will also participate, for the first time, in her monthly blog hop (where you go from one blogger’s site to another) on the 17th of August. So be sure to come back on the 17th to get a chance to win a prize!

Little did I know that when I started making the cards, I would have the chance to educate my children and be more informed about breast cancer at the same time! My 11 yr old daughter saw me making the cards, recognised the ribbon straight away (I was surprised!), and asked me why I was making so many cards with them on it. After I explained, she asked me how to check herself and said she would do it every month too! Then my 13 yr old son asked if he should check himself as well. If I didn’t read Michele’s story, I would have agreed when my daughter said he couldn’t have breast cancer as he didn’t have breasts! Men do have breasts tissues and though rare, can also get breast cancer. My hubby joined in the conversation and asked if the cards were to remind men to get their prostates checked too…which led me to find out that light blue is the symbol for prostate cancer support, so I guess I’ll be making some in light blue in the future too!

In the meantime, as I had tons of cards to make, I went crazy with ink pads, brusho powders, acrylic paints, distress inks, alcohol inks…smooshing, stamping, smudging, heat emboss, emboss resist… Today I will be showing you just 3 of the cards I made, but my favourite card can only be seen during the blog hop on the 17th, so be sure to come back!

The cards were made using CASual Friday stamps and dies Michele designed to raise funds for the National Breast Cancer Foundation. I don’t own any yet, but I can’t wait for another of my “craft drug mules” to go to the States and bring them back for me! In the meantime, I borrowed them from a good friend, Arachana Burke. She’s also the one that taught me how to stamp when I first started 6 months ago! Thanks again Arachana for all your help!

For the card above, I first smudged the background using Distress inks and Ranger’s mini blending tool, sprizted water on it and added Brusho powders. To add some glitter and shine, I also added some Perfect pearl powders. The inlaid ribbon was heat embossed with a self mixture of WOW pink and pearly translucent embossing powders! I stamped the sentiments in white using my Misti. The scalloped edge rectangle comes from My Favourite Things Blueprints 20 set to cut the card and adhered it to a lavender cardstock.

I should have taken another pic to show off the shine of the Perfect Pearls and texture of the embossed ribbon, but its too late now as I gave the card to my hubby’s Aunt Begonia!

Addicted to Stamps & More – Anything Goes  

HLS Anything goes with Dies 

This magnet card was made by first playing with alcohol inks on a lupo card! I then cut the ribbon and side strips with my Big Shot plus and stuck them on, and finished up by stamping the sentiments with my misti and black Tsukinecko ink. I added self adhesive magnectic strips behind, so my friend Denise could stick it on her fridge.

CAS Color & Sketches – 

The next magnectic card was inspired by the sketch from Freshly Made Sketches.

For the ribbon, I first stamped Hero Arts Cling Stamp “Poppy Background” onto a card stock and cut the ribbon die from it. I stamped the sentiment with Tsukinecko black ink with my Misti onto a strip of lilac paper and assembled everything onto a glittery designer paper. This is another card I should have taken another pic to show off the glitter, but its also too late as this one has gone to my mother in law!
