Summer vacation in Madrid

Hi, I’m back again today with another card challenge over at The Sisterhood of Crafters and this fortnight’s theme as chosen by Debbie is “Summer Vacation”.  You have until Sunday 5th August to link up your creations and let us know what you did/are doing/going to do/dream to do during your summer vacation.

I wanted to portray in my card everything I was doing in Madrid while on vacation here at my in-laws. So when I saw the cute penguins, from Clearly Besotted’s “Pick a Penguin” set, with sushi on their heads, the idea to paint them with the skyline of Madrid in the background popped into my head. First of all, why do penguins have sushi on my their heads? I was wondering this out loud to my hubby and he said, “well penguins eat fish”, so… ” I felt a little dumb then… But you might be asking, what does sushi have to do with Madrid? Well, since we come here so often, after the first few days of eating tapas, we start hunting down good Asian restaurants, especially Japanese, as Ulm doesn’t have good Asian food. So much so that my Facebook friends starting asking why I only posted pics of Asian food!

I also decided to do this in watercolour as I also took some painting lessons these last few weeks, (my first since I started water-colouring 6 months ago), as there aren’t many in Ulm, and my Spanish is much better than my German! If you want to see what I painted, have a look here.

I stamped the penguins with Mustard seed distress ink, which is the only colour other than black that I brought with me, as its great for water-colouring, mixing nicely with most colours I paint with. I sketched in the skyline of Madrid and painted everything with my Winsor and Newton Watercolours and a size 2 Raphael Maestro brush, on 300g watercolour paper. Once it was dry, I cut it down and adhered it to a dark blue card base from The Paper Studio, which a dear friend gave me a whole box of assorted colours. The sentiment from Hampton Art was stamped with Versafine black ink and my days are certainly filled with happiness here, being with my family and painting and eating what I love!

I’m rather proud of this miniature watercolour scene and I might just try and paint the skyline on a much larger format. Well, I hope you enjoyed my post and that you’ll pop over to The Sisterhood of Crafters blog and visit my “sistahs” to see what gorgeous cards they created just to inspire you to join in. I look forward to seeing your creations in the link up. So what have you been doing this summer?
