AECP – Masking Unleashed!

Hi all! I’m here today to share a card I made after attending the “Masking Unleashed” class taught by Svitlana Shayevich for my 2nd level of the Altenew Educator Certification Program.  Before I took this online course at the Altenew Academy, consisting of 6 wonderfully instructive videos, I only knew of 2 ways of masking. The traditional “with post-it” way & because I’m learning to paint, I know about masking liquids too. But now I know so many other ways, and also techniques to incorporate masking in my card making.

Today’s card comprises of two of those new techniques I learnt. The first is to use a full masking paper. I know some people can find full sticky note pads (as opposed to only the top being sticky) but even on Amazon in Germany I couldn’t find them. So when I learnt that there exists special A4 masking paper, it got me thinking to use my label sheets I already have. These adhesive sheets are A4 size, so good for any size dies. And once I just stick them onto my clothes first to get a little adhesive off, they are good to be used as masks on my cards!

The other technique was to add a diecut, I used one from Altenew Floral Shadow, on one part of the card as a mask and blend the other part of the card lightly with ink. I used Altenew inks for this, on Nina Solar white card stock. Then I moved the diecut to another part of the card and blended in more ink and so on until I was satisfied. I started with lighter inks and progressed to darker ones. This is what gives the different shades of the leaves.  You could start directly with a darker shade I guess but as I’m not very good at blending, I found it easier to start with a lighter shade.

I then flicked some white acrylic paint on it. I diecut this panel with My Favorite Things scallop rectangle die and matted it on a light pink card base. To finish I added a vellum diecut of the same leaf and added a strip of sentiment, also from Altenew on it.

Well, I hope you liked my card and I would love to know if you’ve ever tried this technique before too. Thanks for taking the time to stop by and I do appreciate your comments.

  2. GREAT job with the masking! I am glad that you found a way to use masking paper without having to buy one on line! The striking results are worth the effort! Thanks so much for entering your beautiful work in Altenew AECP assignment Gallery. Beautiful colors and design. Well done!

  3. I hear you about masking, and am still trying this out myself – I did find an ‘Eclipse’ masking roll after watching the Altenew ‘One Layer Cards’ course…..on Amazon for UK – maybe for Germany? Not trried it yet, though. 🙂 JudiKins Eclipse Art Masking Tape Roll-15.2cmx10 Meters, Other, Multicoloured
